The Politecnico di Milano with its 21 Departments and 45.000 students, is the leading Italian University in the fields of engineering,
architecture and planning.
The Dipartimento di Architettura e Pianificazione (DIAP), is one of the largest departments in the Politecnico di Milano in terms of personnel and budget.
DIAP counts 28 full professors, 38 associate
professors, 28 researchers, 15 technicians, 7 administrative
employees, 2 librarians and 2 ausiliares.
DIAP promotes 2 PhD courses the first one in
in Territorial and Environmental Planning (Coordinator Prof. Giorgio
Ferraresi), the second one in Urban Project and Policies
(Coordinator Luigi Mazza) and a Master course in Territorial
Planning (Director Prof. Patrizia Gabellini).
It gives also the major contribution to the
teaching staff of the Degree Course of Urban Territorial and
Environmental Planning that has more than 1.000 students.
The main activity of the DIAP is research, either through the
ordinary channels of the Ministry for the University and Scientific
Research, the National Research Council, the European Union, and
through research contracts with public and private bodies.
The main fields of research and consultancy are territorial
analysis, the analysis and design of planning processes, the
preparation of planning tools at all the territorial scales, the
design of new policy instruments like the time-plans, housing
policies, parks plans, negotiated development schemes, traffic
plans.
DIAP has its own Library specialised in the various planning fields
with more than one hundred journals, 4.500 volumes, videos and a
specialised "Archive of strategic plans".
DIAP Publishes since 1988 the Journal "Territorio"
that is a nationally recognised journal in the field of planning
education and research.
DIAP is member of the European Urban Research
Association (EURA), and of the Association of European School of
Planning (AESOP).
The Department budget for the year 2000
without personnel costs has been of about 4,5 millions Euros. Its
patrimonial value consisting in various research equipment is of
about 1,6 millions Euros.
DIAP is articulated in 14 Research
Laboratories that develop the different specialisation areas and
where resources are collected and organised.
The Laboratory "Innovation in Urban
Policies", which responsible is Prof. Alessandro Balducci,
is dedicated to research in the fields of urban governance,
consensus building in planning practices, strategic planning,
institution design, local development and community involvement.
